Magnets

Haven't blogged in a while. Mostly busy. Work is busy. Home is busy. And things like this just fall through.

So last week we went to the San Mateo School Districts Magnet School Fair. In addition to local neighborhood schoold, you can apply for your kid to go to one of several specialized schools in the district. In addition to all the mandatory lessons, each of these schools has a special emphasis. There's a Spanish immersion, a Chinese immersion, a science and math, a live arts program, a project based learning program and a couple montessouri programs. In addition to the special emphasis, other perks are that these schools seem to be getting a little more money and have fewer bs restrictions to deal with.

I feel fortunate to have these choices. I also feel a little intimidated. How am I supposed to figure out which one of these programs would be best for my 4 year old? My dad is a scientist. My brother is a scientist. It doesn't mean that I'm a scientist. I've got some inkling of my kids likes and dislikes, but I don't have an inkling which of these programs would be best for her.

I get that parents project things for their kids. Not that this is the biggest decsison I'll ever make for her, but I am pretty much going to have to take my best shot and pray. And if she comes back to complain about it someday, all I can say is I did my best.
