My Pick to Head the UN.

A darkhorse name that has been floated around to be the next head the UN is Aung San Suu Kyi. The military of Burma/Myramar is so afraid of this four-eleven woman that they have locked her under house arrest for the last fifteen years. This means no one but her nurse sees her. This means the leaders of this country are afraid of any word that she might utter or write, but they are also afraid to murder a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and hero of the people. She continues to sacrafice everything, including time with her children and now deceased husband live in peaceful defiance of the military junta and demand democracy. As she has said, "There has to be a united determination to persevere in the struggle, to make sacrifices in the name of enduring truths, to resist the corrupting influences of desire, ill will, ignorance and fear.

I understand her first loyalties are to her own people, and not fighting the US on a dozen issues, but she'd be my choice.

Five thoughts for Friday.

I have no ethical obligations preventing me from introducing as much bias or opinion as I want into my blog. I think I'd find that would be pretty sad. Espcially since the media industry is only pretending not to have any biases.

1. Congratulations to Oscar Arias, elected President of Costa Rica once again after a 20 year hiatus. If you haven't been paying attention, there seems to be a very quiet democratic revolution going on in Latin America.

2. This Cheney shooting thing. Way too much hot air. Except for the guy that was shot, this was a non-issue. Don't let it distract you from what's really going on.

3. The Olympic's are good to watch once every four years, but the TV coverage blows. Watch it with the volume turned down.

4. I think there were about 3.5 billion people on Earth when I was born. We're supposed to pass the 6.5 billion mark sometime this Saturday. Where the hell did you all come from?

5. I haven't seen most of the Oscar nominees, but one of my recent favorites was the Motorcyle Diaries. Maybe this movie made it last year, I don't really follow these things. See Che before he became Che.

Commercial Free

I watch more TV now because of TIVO but it is more efficient TV watching. I watch the shows I want to watch when I want to watch them and nothing else. It's made a lot of my life more efficient. I'm surprised how much more time I have for writing. Not watching commercials will add days to your life.

What does a woman want?

A guy who looks like a player, but really isn't one. A guy who's a bit of nerdy, but socially charming. A guy who is ambitious and earns lots of money, but will always put wife and family first. Pants that fit.

All of it and more. The simple answer is that they want the same thing we all want. They want to be in control of their own lives.

Right, Dear?

Love. Always.

A different kind of writing

Usually, when I'm writing, I have as little idea of the ending as the reader. That's why the last page or two usually take longer than the rest of the story put together. This time something different is going on. I actually know I want to end a story, or not exactly, but I've already had the little epiphany at the end that will hold the piece together. Now, I'm trying not to rush to the ending. I'm trying to make sure that enough detail exists that it will really be a story before I get to the end.

My State of the Union

Despite numerous lies and other more egregious impeachable offenses we continue to be led by a cabal focused on its own wealth and power. We went to war based on lies and re-written history. We handed over our government positions to lackeys, cronies and other incompetents. We ignored our poor and gave our tax revenue to our rich. We have destroyed every trust we could. We have made it hard to have heart. Don't believe Junior.
